Malaspina Choir and the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Lionel Tanod
Malaspina Choir begins the celebration of its 50th season with a concert featuring four centuries of choral music, from the 18th century with Antonio Vivaldi’s Magnificat to the 21st and Bob Chilcott’s Bird of Dawning. As well as time, the music spans genres: sacred pieces from Vivaldi, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Rossini; tango/jazz (Piazzolla); anti-war (Jenkins) and celebration of the Saviour’s birth (Chilcott); lullaby (Whitacre) and drinking songs (Hatfield). The mix of music in this performance highlights the versatility of the Malaspina Choir and includes favourites from our repertoire as well as ones new to us. Besides our accomplished accompanist Sharon Wishart, we’ve invited our frequent collaborator the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra. We’re featuring choir members as soloists as well as organist Jenny Vincent and cellist Brendan Millbank. This is an exciting start to the celebration of the choir’s half-century of bringing the best in the choral repertoire to Nanaimo and Vancouver Island. Come join us for this special occasion!
